Act 1, Scene 2:
How does Rose’s role as a wife and mother reflect societal expectations of women, particularly African American women, in the 1950s, and how does her sense of duty impact her relationship with Troy?
She is very supportive of Cory and his future and wants what he wants. She goes with the expectation of always being there and supportive. This affects her relationship with Troy because their views clash.
Act 1, Scene 3:
In what ways do Troy’s interaction with Corey reveals the complexities of masculinity and fatherhood in African American culture, and how does his past shape his expectations of manhood?
It shows Troy taking care of Cory and providing for him. At the same time, he wants his son not to be like him with sports. They both enjoy sports, but Troy believes it will get Cory nowhere in the future.
